Art Nouveau

began at the turn of the 20th century (gone by beginning of WWI)
literally means: "new art"
blur the line between fine art and decorative art
organic, especially floral and other plant inspired motifs, as well as highly-stylized, flowing curvilinear forms
approach to design according to which artists should work on everything from architecture, making art apart of everyday life
work in harmony to create a "total work of art" building furniture, textiles, clothes, and jewelry all conformed to principles of the movement

Glasgow Style:

unique style of decor that bears elements of several contrasting styles: its hallmarks are long, long, rectilinear lines, reaching up as if appealing to the heavens

- offset within this lattice are subtly elegant curves and natural designs such as the Mackintosh rose. 

curves and colors sparse against the geometric backdrop

lines hold back the flamboyance of the curves, creating a delightful visual tension.

some borrowed motifs from the arts and crafts movement: 

-rectilinear grid and distinct typefaces

-even surpassed those Arts and Craft pioneers by including imaginary images (rather than images drawn from direct observation)
